Last week we were proud to be a part of Sister Ray’s Record Store Day celebration in London. We had a tremendous time wandering around the sunny streets of Soho, visiting flower stalls, eating pizza and soaking up the party atmosphere. Thanks very much to Sister Ray and everyone involved for putting on such a great event.

Here’s a video from the day

For those who don’t have a local store and were unable to get their hands on a copy of our Record Store Day EP, we will be selling a few that we asked to be kept aside for our webshop on Monday May 20th.

SHORT FILM - RECORDING UPSTAIRS AT UNITED EP

We are very excited to present a short film documenting the making of the EP made by our friend, the enormously talented, New York based film maker Luke Norby. We have been working with Luke over the last few weeks to make this film which has been a labour of love for all of us.

Please have a watch here

UPSTAIRS AT UNITED EPRECORD STORE DAY 2013Back in 2011 we were on a US tour with Blitzen Trapper and Dawes when our good friends at United Record Pressing invited us to stop by and record a live EP. United arranged for Chris Mara from Nashville studio ‘Welcome to 1979’ to set up a mobile analogue studio in the rooms above the factory floor and record us, live, straight to tape.
Several members of Blitzen Trapper agreed to be our backing band for the session  and on our one day off we all got up early and embarked upon a mini adventure from Birmingham, Alabama to Nashville, Tennessee.
The resulting EP is released worldwide for Record Store Day this Saturday, April 20th.
‘Upstairs At United’ is the 6th in the series already containing the likes of Brandon Benson, Keane, Jeff The Brotherhood and Willy Mason. You should find the EP in all good independent record shops.
To celebrate Record Store Day we are going to be playing outside Sister Ray Records on Berwick Street, Soho, London. It is the first time the street has been closed for a live concert, it is free entry and the line-up is fantastic, it looks set to be a great day

Interviewed by Laura Marling for Lab Magazine

A few weeks ago we got the opportunity to be interviewed by Laura Marling, the results of which are featured in The Lab Magazine.

Way back in 2010 we supported Laura on one of her US tours. It was fun recalling that epic tour and chatting to Laura about being a musician, song writing and feeling like artists.
Please follow the link here to read the piece: www.thelabmagazine.com

2012 is drawing to an end and we would like to take a minute to thank you all for your support over the last year.  Thank you to all the people who have made it out to one of our shows, kept us busy with orders in the Smoke Fairies shop, and to all of those who have taken the time to send us encouraging messages and comments.

We would also like to thank independent record shops who have continued to support us and introduce new people to our music. In particularly Piccadilly, Rough Trade, Resident & Sister Ray Records who have each included “Blood Speaks” in their top albums of 2012 polls.

Tour Starts This Weekend + In-store Sessions Added

We are having a last minute scramble to sort everything before our UK tour starts next week. The van has been booked, spare strings have been purchased and setlists have been discussed but I still need to locate my thermos and spork, essentials in road side dinning.
In some places we will be visiting local record stores, playing a few song, chatting to people and, in one case, eating pies.

Monday Sept 24 at 1pm - Rise, 70 Queens Road, Bristol, BS8 1QU

New Single ‘Let Me Know’ 7-inch & video

We are pleased to announce ‘Let Me Know’ will be the next single to be taken from ‘Blood Speaks’.
TheLineOfBestFit.com premiered the video for it on the internet yesterday, you can take a look at it here:

We shot the video on a beautiful London evening a few weeks ago. It was the first ever video we have made where it has actually been warm. We shouldn’t complain, but we could have done with a fan and paddling pool. Getting up to the rooftop was a massive operation. We had already had a tiring day stuck in a hot van driving back to London from Sheffield and as soon as we got into London we all had to jump out and speedily unload and lug everything up six flights of narrow stairs. It was worth it just to look out over the rooftops at the sunset. Carrying everything down the stairs was less fun and slightly more dangerous
.

The vinyl is limited to 300 copies only and the b-side to the single is a remix of ‘Film Reel’ created by old band mate Kristofer Harris for us. Have a listen here: http://soundcloud.com/smokefairies/film-reel-remix

+ You can pre-order the single by clicking the image or the link here: www.SmokeFairies.com

Last weekend’s show at Latitude festival made us eager for September to roll on and our UK tour to begin. We played in the Word Arena to a splendid crowd who were witnesses to the first ever live performance of our cover of ‘She Sell Sanctuary’. Playing a song for the first time always gives me quite a buzz and to add to it I found £1.35 on the ground after the show.
